Internationalisation at home in Finnish HEIs : a comprehensive approach is needed
2020
International mobility continues to be a priority focus area for internationalising higher education. According to the European Association for International Education (EAIE) Barometer survey, the most common international priority activities included international student mobility, international student recruitment and international staff mobility (Sandström & Hudson, 2018). However, there is rising awareness that international mobility only serves a small percentage of students and there is a need for non-mobile students and staff to gain international and intercultural competencies. This article highlights and explores the findings of a Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture funded pr…
Tasmaniassa moni asia on toisin
2021
Discursive Identity Work and Interculturality during Blue-Collar Work Practice Abroad : Finnish Engineering Students as Language Learners and Users
2019
This chapter addresses foreign language learners’ and users’ discursive identity work and interculturality in the context of blue-collar work practice abroad. It focuses on Finnish engineering students who were working in Germany with the aim of learning about their field of study. The participants had learnt English as a foreign language at school but had little or no previous knowledge of the local language of the host country. The study aims to find out what discourses the students draw on, how they orient to sameness and difference and what identities they make relevant in these discursive processes. The data used for this study are interviews collected at the beginning and after the st…

Puolisona maailmalla : suomalaisten ekspatriaattipuolisojen kokemuksia ekspatriaattielämänmuodosta Thaimaan Bangkokissa
2014
The adjustment of Finnish expatriates in Britain with special reference to communicative comperence : a case study
2002
Ulkomaantyökomennuksille mukaan muuttaneet suomalaisnaiset kertovat kokemuksistaan
2006
The objective of this qualitative study is to reveal the discursive reality of Finnish women, who have chosen to follow their husbands to expatriate assignments. The research material includes interviews of seventeen (17) Finnish housewives who lived in Singapore in 1999. The primary theoretical framework of the study is a social-constructive view, in which the reality is seen to have been constructed through meanings that create and maintain cultural practices, social roles and institutions. Gender is interpreted as produced socially, politically and in language. Human beings in the study exist as cultural and social beings with sex. An underlying assumption of the analysis is that the wom…
Expatriate experience as part of the life and career of the expatriate : a cross-cultural adjustment and learning perspective
2016
Amidst the ever increasing trend of globalization, expatriation has become of great con-cern. The nature of expatriation is argued to be subject to changes in the external context, organizational structures and careers. Nevertheless expatriates have traditionally been perceived as a fairly homogenous, broad population in the literature and the alternative forms of expatriation besides company-assigned expatriates have received little attention. The purpose of this study is to explore the changing face of expatriation and understand the phenomena of cross-cultural adjustment and learning and their perceived contribution to the overall experience. The study is a qualitative case study and the…
